If you want to know how New York became New York, look no further than the top of Museum Mile. As the city's official museum, the Museum of the City of New York celebrates the greatest city in the world through exhibitions and programs that reflect New York's distinctive character, especially its heritage of diversity, opportunity, and perpetual transformation.

Founded in 1923, the City Museum presents ongoing and temporary exhibitions drawn from its collection of 750,000 objects, including prints, photographs, decorative arts, costumes, paintings, sculpture, toys, and theatrical memorabilia. Exhibitions on extended view include Activist New York, which presents the passions and conflicts that underlie the city's history of protest, as well as Gilded New York, which showcases lavish costumes, jewelry, and decorative objects from New York's original one percent - the city's elite class of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Every year, the City Museum presents five to ten temporary exhibitions that explore diverse topics that are unique to New York, such as graffiti art (City As Canvas, February - September, 2014), Superstorm Sandy (Rising Waters, October, 2013 - April, 2014), and New York apartment living in the 21st century (Making Room, January - September 2013.) Free guided gallery tours and family self-guides are available on site. Finally, no trip to the Big Apple is complete without Timescapes, a multimedia film on view at all times that tells the history of New York City, from its settlement by the Dutch to its present-day status as the capital of the world, in just 22 minutes.

The City Museum is located at 1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street in Manhattan. The City Museum is open daily, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Your CitySights Pass entitles you to entry to all of the Museum's exhibitions.
